St. James Town Greening Project

ABOUT THE GREENING PROJECT

As St. James Town residents who are working to refashion our neighbourhood into a community which reflects the energy, diversity, and commitment of its residents.

We are bringing together, planners, architects, land owners, residents and financial resources to support and contribute to our efforts.

Over fifteen years we have worked to improve traffic safety, install state of the art school play fields, saved community swimming pools, create community space, revitalize play grounds and build parkettes.

Over the last year we have been the community advocate providing input to a major land development in our community.

Our work was cited by the developer as the best he has seen from a community group in his entire career.

St. James Town has been the first Canadian home for newcomers to Canada for over 50 years. It is time to revitalize our community and create a neighbourhood of which everyone has contributed and is proud.

THE ISSUE

When first built over 50 years ago, the infrastructure of St. James Town did not anticipate the existing density nor the population make up.

The 1 square kilometer neighbourhood was originally designed as an adults only community for roughly 15000 people. The neighbourhood is today the home of over 30000 who are new comer families, those reaching retirement and those on social assistance.

Basic facilities: park space, recreation, retail, garbage management, social and medical services either do not exist or are inadequate.

The health of the community could be vastly improved by creatively addressing these issues.

We have identified 13 areas which, when improved and would help to remedy the situation. The costs and resources required to revitalize these areas vary. Some. Such as the playgrounds, school play yard and piazza have already been successfully addressed.

Cooperation from land owners, school boards, residents and the city are required to completely achieve the objectives. We are acting as a coordinating body to bring these varying groups together and address each of their concerns,
