We believe that we have a moral imperative to act on climate change to protect current and future generations from its adverse effects and to ensure a just transition to a sustainable future.

It is overwhelming to individuals and small organizations to find ways to have a meaningful impact on climate change and to support work in this area. In addressing the enormity of the task we have sought our organizations who are directly involved in implementing scalable solutions, whose work includes rigorous research and whose results impact policy. To this end we have identified several groups to which we provide support. These include The Toronto Trash Team, Environmental Defence.

U of T Trash Team

The U of T Trash Team is a science-based community outreach organization made up of undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, researchers, local volunteers and staff all working together with a common goal to increase waste literacy in our community while reducing plastic pollution in our ecosystems. We were founded in 2017 in collaboration with the Rochman Lab, part of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Toronto.

The Trash Team Goal is to increase waste literacy in the community to motivate action and inform ways to reduce plastic pollution in our ecosystems.

Work locally and build capacity globally by piloting solutions, informing prevention and cleanup, sharing resources, and inspiring independent groups to work together to scale up our collective capacity to tackle global plastic pollution.

Community Matters Toronto Partners with the Trash Team through the Pollution Prevention Project Fellowship. The work of Five current and past Fellows can be viewed here.
