We are creating a mural on the wall of the Cabbagetown Youth Centre/BGC Toronto Kiwanis facing Flos Williams Lane. We would like it to reflect our neighbourhood as seen through the eyes of those who live and work here. This survey is designed to gather your ideas. We will use these to design a mural and other art projects that reflect the best of our community.
About the Project
The Cultural Collage Mural project will transform the west wall of the Cabbagetown/BGC Toronto Kiwanis Youth Centre into a vibrant work of art.
The project is in honour of Michael Cavanaugh, a local artist and musician. His belief in recognizing and building on the strengths of the local community has had a lasting impact on our neighbourhood and the young mural artists he has mentored and supported. His is an extensive involvement in the arts including the creation of the Bell Box project and numerous murals he has helped to create.
Cultural Collage is the name Michael created to announce an annual St. James Town celebration of multi cultural dance, music, and food.
The Cultural Collage Mural will celebrate and honour neighbourhood strengths and history, local art and artists.
Through a series of events, we will recognize the strong contribution the Arts and artist already make to our community. These events will include historic walks, a film night, a walking tour of local gardens, and a tour of Bell Canada boxes and murals which have become canvases for unique depictions of our neighbourhood.
These events will culminate in a Mural Design Charette where all in the neighbourhood are invited to comment, contribute and collaborate in the final mural design
The mural will be created over the summer of 2026, and an unveiling celebration will take place in the fall.

This mural is a celebration of comm(unity), connection, and shared stories, brought to life through a vibrant, folk-art inspired visual narrative. It reflects the spirit of the neighborhood—where diversity, history, and everyday moments come together in harmony.
At its heart, the mural expresses interconnectedness. A flowing river, inspired by the Don Valley, moves gently across the wall from left to right, symbolizing the continuous flow of life, relationships, and experiences within the community. Along this path, each element is thoughtfully placed to represent a different layer of local identity and collective memory.
The running cabbages bring a playful yet meaningful nod to ‘Blair’s Run’, capturing the energy, resilience, and shared joy of community events that bring people together.
Nearby, a traditional house integrated with modern high-rise buildings reflects the unique coexistence of old and new, representing the blend of historic Cabbagetown charm with the urban presence of St. James Town.
Anchoring the mural is the guitar, a tribute to Michael Cavanaugh, whose legacy lives on through music. The flowing musical notes represent how his passion continues to spread joy, connection, and harmony, uniting people across backgrounds and generations.
The elephant, gently guiding a kite, symbolizes the immigrant or newcomer experience , strength, hope, and the journey of building a new life while staying connected to one’s roots. It reflects the diversity that shapes and enriches the community.
Moments of togetherness are illustrated through the cats gathered around tea, representing social connection, warmth, and everyday interactions—the small but meaningful gatherings that build a sense of belonging.
Complementing this is the frog engaged in community gardening, a symbol of care, growth, and shared responsibility for nurturing both the environment and relationships within the neighborhood.
Together, these elements create a visual story of a community that is diverse yet united, rooted yet evolving, and deeply connected through shared expereinces, creativity and care
The mural invites viewers to see themselves as part of this living, breathing network, where every individual contributes to the rhythm of the whole!
